Special Events in Baltimore
Baltimore's biggest event, The Preakness Celebration, takes place during May and culminates in the running of The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. The celebration includes a parade, hot air balloon race and concerts. Many of Baltimore's celebrations and festivals take place in the Inner Harbor or in the surrounding parks and plazas. The Inner Harbor also is the site of the Showcase of Nations during which colorful ethnic festivals are held each weekend from June to October; each honors a different group of settlers. In July Mount Vernon's Artscape features such activities as continuous musical performances, indoor and outdoor visual arts exhibitions, film and theater. Nearby Timonium hosts the Maryland State Fair in late August. The Fells Point Fun Festival attracts crowds to Baltimore's harbor area in early October. The Baltimore Book Festival is held in mid-September downtown at Mount Vernon Place. The Recreational Vehicle Show, also held in Timonium, is in mid-February. From late April through mid-May, the Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage opens homes and gardens in the Baltimore area and around the state for public viewing. Phone (410) 821-6933.
